Mozilla Thunderbird is a free desktop mail app for Windows, macOS and Linux. It works well with any custom domain email that supports IMAP and SMTP. This guide shows the manual setup, which is the most reliable.
What you need
- Your full email address (for example anna@yourcompany.com)
- Your mailbox password
- Your provider's server settings. For Maililo:
| Server | Port | Security | Username | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming (IMAP) | mail.maililo.com | 993 | SSL/TLS | full email address |
| Outgoing (SMTP) | mail.maililo.com | 465 | SSL/TLS | full email address |
Step 1: Open account setup
- First launch: Thunderbird opens the account setup screen automatically.
- Already using Thunderbird: open the menu (☰) → Account Settings → Account Actions → Add Mail Account.
Step 2: Enter your details
Type your name as you want recipients to see it, your email address and password. Tick Remember password if this is your own computer. Click Continue.
Step 3: Configure manually
Thunderbird may try to detect settings. Click Configure manually and enter:
Incoming server
- Protocol: IMAP
- Hostname:
mail.maililo.com - Port:
993 - Connection security: SSL/TLS
- Authentication: Normal password
- Username: your full email address
Outgoing server
- Hostname:
mail.maililo.com - Port:
465 - Connection security: SSL/TLS
- Authentication: Normal password
- Username: your full email address
Click Re-test, then Done.
Step 4: Test it
Send a message to another address you own, then reply to it. Check that:
- the message arrives,
- the reply appears in your Thunderbird inbox,
- your sent message appears in the Sent folder.
Add your signature
Go to Account Settings, select your account and fill in Signature text. Tick Use HTML for formatting.
Troubleshooting
- "Configuration could not be verified": double-check the password and that the username is the full email address.
- Certificate warning: don't accept a certificate for a different host name. Make sure the server is exactly
mail.maililo.com. - Can receive but can't send: check the outgoing port is 465 with SSL/TLS, and authentication is on.
- Sent mail missing from webmail: under Account Settings → Copies & Folders, choose to place copies in the server's Sent folder.
- Password changed: Thunderbird will prompt again; or go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Saved Passwords to update it.
